The fine print
- What this compares. Your current average power bill of $234 a month against your solar payment of $83.73 a month, over 25 years. Utility escalated at 8.5% per year, solar at 2.99% per year.
- Still connected to the grid. You are still connected to the utility grid and would be expected to pay a small fixed monthly rate, considered the standard connection fee.
- Appalachian Power rates are moving. Appalachian Power residential rates in Virginia are up more than 46 percent since July 2021. A customer using 1,000 kWh a month went from about $117 a month to about $172 a month over that period. A further base rate increase of $61.4 million, roughly $9.10 a month for that same customer, was filed in May 2026 and is still pending before the State Corporation Commission, not approved. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
